Expeditions-Adventure Activism at its BEST!

Pacific Wild proudly supported the efforts of three different expeditions to raise awareness of the Enbridge pipeline/tanker traffic issue this year.

ON THE LINE

Watch the trailer for On the Line a film about the self-propelled expedition of filmmaker Frank Wolf and Todd McGowan as they travel the entire length of the proposed pipeline and tanker route.

The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project proposes to run an 1,150 km dual oil and condensate pipeline from Bruderheim, Alberta to Kitimat, B.C. The pipeline would cross over 1,000 watercourses and bring oil supertankers up the B.C. coast for the first time ever. This film follows Frank Wolf and Todd McGowan, both from North Vancouver, as they bike, hike, raft and kayak the track of the pipeline on a fact-finding mission that takes a ground-level look at the pipeline from the perspective of the people who live along the proposed route. STAND UP 4 GREAT BEAR

In May 2010, Norm Hann travelled 300 km from Kitimat to Bella Bella along the proposed oil tanker route on his stand up paddleboard. With stops in local communities and in important areas for traditional food harvesting and wildlife, his goal was to raise awareness of the impacts an oil spill could have on these places. He is currently working on a film about the expedition with fellow expedition kayaker Brian Huntington, and is planning next year’s STANDUP4GREATBEAR Haida Gwaii. Norm also works with Pacific Wild on the SEAS Community Initiative.

From Norm's blog:  “One of the most memorable moments of my whole Standup4greatbear Expedition was coming into Bella Bella and seeing all of the youth there with flags and posters supporting the expedition and saying no to tankers. My inspirations were the youth in all of the communities that I visited, Kitimaat, Hartley Bay and Klemtu. All of these students followed the expedition. It is a very powerful experience to paddle into a community and have the youth waiting for you to arrive so they can dance for you and share their food with you. They are the future, they are the ones that hold the key to their land, to their culture and to their future.”

The Pipedreams Project

Ryan Vandecasteyen, Faroe Des Roches, and Curtis White are members of the
Pipedreams Project, which aims to experience, connect, and engage citizens about the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. The team kayaked from Kitimat to Vancouver, beginning their trip in September and ending the 900 km odyssey at the end of October.

The trio have since been speaking to the issue through a number of venues, including print, television and presentations. They are also producing a film on their trip. To read more about their endeavours, please visit www.thepipedreamsproject.org
